Horseshoe bend is a walled courtyard garden with access on all four sides. It needed a strong geometry to make sense of it. I played with various linking shapes but kept returning to the powerful and playful shape of Horseshoe Bend River in Arizona.
In 2015 my family toured in a circular route the four states of Arizona, Nevada, Utah and California, taking in Antelope Canyon, sleeping over night in the Mohave Desert and driving through majestic landscapes, an incredible experience and Horseshoe Bend River became a metaphor for our journey.
I have imposed my version of that river on the garden to link the doorways and entrance points in the garden, creating places to stop and sit and take in the sun.
The palette for the garden is the colours of the Desert, the bright green and blue-greys of the desert foliage set amongst often pink rocks, dusty ground and desert flowers.
